Supporting a social enterprise through skill-based volunteering

Social enterprises* often encounter resource and skill limitations, hindering their ability to focus on sustainability initiatives. Recognising this challenge, our Responsible Sourcing team and Energy Management Unit (EMU) saw an opportunity to maximise the impact of their volunteer hours through skill-based volunteering.

Our road sign supplier, Nuneaton Signs, was eager to advance its sustainability practices but lacked the capacity to fully focus on this area. To help them with this, we organised a skill-based volunteering day and conducted an energy audit to help them reduce energy consumption. Additionally, we held a session on carbon and responsible sourcing, covering topics such as climate change, greenwashing, carbon scopes, science-based targets, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) feasibility, circular economy opportunities, managing modern slavery and sustainability impacts of spending.

The volunteering sparked valuable discussions on how to enhance their current practices. As a result, Nuneaton Signs updated and improved its modern slavery statement, identified energy saving opportunities and began a heatmapping exercise on the sustainability impacts of different areas of their spend.

We also identified an opportunity to increase our spend with Nuneaton Signs on a range of recyclable signs, improving our environmental and social impact.
